Then & Now SALFORD: 1977 - 2026 Photography Exhibition

This exhibition brings together photographs taken in Salford in 1977 by Steve Chapman and Phil Portus.

For many years, much of this work remained unseen, until Phil’s photographs were exhibited at Cornerstone Langworthy Library in 2024, followed by Steve’s exhibition at the same venue in 2025.

For this exhibition, Phil and Steve have collaborated with two A Level students, Ella Fletcher and Reede Wallace, from the local Pendleton Sixth Form College.

Alongside the historic photographs, the students present their own contemporary images of Salford, displayed in the library’s striking setting.

The exhibition connects past and present perspectives of Salford’s people and places, forming part of an ongoing documentary project that celebrates and champions the city.
