Salford 100
2026 marks one hundred years since Salford was officially granted city status by a Royal Charter by King George V.
“I met my love by the gas works wall
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
I kissed my girl by the factory wall”
– Ewan MacColl
A city of Firsts
Salford – a lot has changed since ‘Dirty Old Town’.
But the sentiment remains, a beacon for industry and innovation and a place for dreamers and creatives.
A city that endures through the bad times and the good, that welcomes, nurtures and supports, that punches above its weight and continuously strives for improvement.
A city of ‘firsts’ with a strong identity, a special heritage and a bold outlook on the future, a place where the people have helped shaped the streets, the communities and the history. A city that has its own spirit.
From a not-to-be-missed cultural programme, to civic events, local community festivals, activities, exhibitions and championing local heroes, it promises to be a year to remember.
What's Coming Up
Our centenary is something to be proud of and to celebrate, so it’s time to party like only Salford knows how.
We’re celebrating a century of city pride and throughout the year ahead we’ll be commemorating this special moment in the city’s history. Residents, communities, businesses and visitors are all invited to join in the festivities from street parties to arts and culture programmes.
A global presence
A lot has changed in 100 years.
Today, Salford is a constantly evolving, with an exciting future as a thriving cultural, economic, and residential city on the global stage.
Over the last decade, Salford has undergone a remarkable transformation, emerging as a modern global city, attracting record public and private investment, and becoming an engine for growth in Greater Manchester.
Salford City Council has set aside up to £1.5m of funding to support the centenary programme as well as focusing further support through partnerships and securing external funding.
